How to Get a Job at Dog Boarding Kennels

Are you about to leave school and thinking about what sort of career you would like? Or perhaps you would like a change from your current job for something else.  If either of these applies to you then a job at a dog boarding kennels might be just what you are after.

Skills required

  • A good rapport and love of dogs
  • The ability to empathise with people who are leaving their pets, possibly for some time
  • A willingness and ability to turn your hand to a wide variety of tasks
  • A basic knowledge of dog first aid
  • Ability to use a computer

Job requirements

  • Cleaning out dog kennels
  • Keeping water in each dog kennel topped up and feeding the dogs twice per day
  • Taking dogs out for their daily exercise
  • Answering the telephone and booking customers in to the computer system
  • Washing and grooming dogs ready to be taken home

However, if you think that this job is all about long walks and playing with lovable pets then you should think again.  You will probably be on a rota to work late, early or night shifts keeping an eye on the dogs in your care.  You will also be expected to willingly participate in general cleaning and also clearing up after sick animals.  If the boarding kennel that you work for offers extras such as dog grooming then you will be expected to learn to perform these duties too.  If you don’t mind these things then you will certainly enjoy your job as it is very rewarding to work with animals.

The pay for being a kennel worker, unless you have some management duties too, is not particularly high though this will vary depending on whether you are in a city or in the countryside and how much the kennel is able to charge its customers.
