Create Your Own Mini Greenhouses For Children

It’s a good idea to get your children involved in growing plants, as it is educational and helps them to appreciate plants for what they really are – something valuable and amazing. It really doesn’t matter whether it’s something you can eat, such as fruit, vegetables or herbs or something to look at like flowers. The experience of being involved in something so natural that you can do together as parent and child is quite endearing.

You don’t need much to get started with building mini greenhouses for your kids. In fact, much of the time you will find that you probably have these items hanging around the home anyway, and you’ll also be doing your bit for the environment as you will now find out. You will need a two liter soda bottle per child, pair of scissors, planting soil, permanent marker, tape, seeds and a plant pot of about 4in in depth. The beauty of using the plastic bottle is that you’ll be doing your bit towards a cleaner environment by recycling it!

Here are the step by step instructions on how to create mini greenhouses for children:

1.    Place the plastic bottle in a sink or bowl full of warm soapy water for easy removal of the label. Wipe the bottle down to remove the gluey residue.
2.    With a permanent marker, draw around the bottle just about 3 inches from the bottom and then using a scissors cut all the way around the mark. You can dispose of the bottom part of the bottle and watch out for any sharp edges which you can cover up with some tape.
3.    Completely fill the 4in plant pot with soil and put either some seeds or seedlings in it. Water as needed so the top layer of soil is damp.
4.    Remove the lid from the top of the bottle and invert it over the plant pot and push it down so it is well fitted and stays upright.
5.    Place the mini greenhouse in a location that receives a filtered amount of light only – if the bottle overheats the plant may get damaged.

This is a wonderful and inexpensive way of introducing little ones to nature and how plants grow. In practice things always make more sense and this will be something that your children will remember doing for many years to come. For more information, please visit Your Mini Greenhouse.
