When deciding how to properly organize the storage in your home, there a few things to keep in mind. Here are some general ideas to keep you on track.

If you have a box of stuff that you intend to put away in your closet and not think about for some time, then don’t worry about the kind of container you get for it. Just get something cheap, throw it in there, and forget about it. Since you won’t need it in the foreseeable future, there’s no reason to worry about keeping it in easy access, though you don’t want your closets or attic to get too cluttered.

If you intend to keep it in, say, the living room, you want something that fits the design of the room a bit better though. I don’t recommend keeping too much out in the open in your home because it will get so easily cluttered, but having a cabinet or a dresser of some sort that matches the design of your home will go a long way in making things look nice. As a simple example, I like the look of wicker, and it would fit well with my apartment, so I’d have no problem getting a wicker chest and using that.

If you have a lot of little stuff that’s difficult to keep neat, then just put it in the box. Perhaps put it in a plastic bag to keep any loose pieces together, but bins are a great way to keep things ‘compartmentalized’, out of the way and out of mind.
